Antiquity was an age of superstition; today, we are in the age of science. Before reaching its present day zenith, the modern, scientific age had to pass through three stages. The first was marked by the eradication of the superstitious mentality; the second saw the practical beginnings of scientific research; the third is the spectacular culmination of the scientific process in the second half of the twentieth century. The present book by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan examines the contribution made to the completion of the first two stages by Islam throughout its first millenium. Henri Pirenne has acknowledged this as a historical fact: “Islam changed the face of the globe. The traditional order of history was overthrown.” (Henri Pirenne, History of Western Europe) The book examines the aspects of the Islamic revolution and how they were instrumental in creating the modern age.
The book Leading a Spiritual Life aims at developing a spiritual bent of mind in its reader. The author, Maulana Wahiduddin Khan believes that to attain spirituality one does not need to retire to the jungles, rather one must live in the midst of all the activities of the world and develop the ability to convert material events into non-material or spiritual events. According to the author, “If you want to live as a spiritual person, learn the art of extraction. That is, you have to be able to extract spiritual content from material things. This will give you spiritual food, and thus you will be able to develop yourself as a spiritual person.” Spiritual living is the greatest need of the day and in the various chapters of the book, the author enlightens the reader on how to deal with day-to-day problems of failure, stress, unhappiness and conflict.
Ethical Values are the basis of spirituality. Everybody needs a set of guiding principles to live life in order to be successful. The present book, The Moral Vision gives guidance for ethical success in life through the small articles and real stories written by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan. This anthology of articles is designed to illustrate the science of life, which the author has derived from one of the basic principles of the Quran: “surely, with every hardship there is ease.” (94:5-6) In his view, failure in life is a common occurrence, but coupled with a positive attitude, it can be transformed into success. Readers are sure to benefit from their reading if they apply those same principles in living their day-to-day lives.
The Purpose of Life explains the Creation Plan of God. The Creation Plan regarding life, which we have been told of by God through His prophets, is that the Creator has created man as an eternal creature, with the first brief span of his life in the pre-death period and the rest of his life—a much longer period—in the post-death period. According to this plan, God created man and settled him in the present world, on the planet earth. God gave man the opportunity to stay here without applying any curbs on his freedom. Man has the right either to use his freedom in a rightful manner, or to misuse it as he pleases. This is his test. When human history has run its course, it will terminate with the Day of Judgement. The happenings on that day will be on an epic scale. Then the Creator of man will manifest Himself in order to mete out rewards or punishments commensurate with the record of human deeds on earth. Those who have passed the test will be blessed with eternal paradise, while those who have failed the test will be cast into eternal hell.
