In the present book, Maulana Wahiduddin Khan explains that nature demands that men and women lead their lives together within the bonds of marriage. In Islam, marriage is both a civil contract entered upon by mutual consent of the bride and the groom, and a highly sacred bond to which great religious and social importance is attached. As an institution, it is a cohesive force in society. In this book Maulana Wahiduddin Khan explains that while marriage is the rule of life, divorce is only an exception, but it must also be accepted as a reality. Although Islam permits divorce, it lays great emphasis on its being a concession, and a measure to be resorted to only when there is no alternative. Seeing it in this light, Prophet Muhammad said, “Of all things permitted, divorce is the most hateful in the sight of God.” (Abu Dawud, Sunan, Kitab at-Talaq, 2/255.)
Islam gives equal status, rights, and blessings to men and women in this world and the Hereafter. In the early period of Islam, women were fully active in different fields of life, from housework to agriculture to business and from worship in the mosque and outside work. The modern world offers plentiful opportunities for women to choose from remaining within the bounds of modesty and piety. As educators, they can equip an entire generation with standard education and as mothers, they can inculcate ethical training at home. Women can become instrumental in preparing the new generations to become aware, duty-conscious, and spiritual individuals.
The present book, Hijab in Islam is a translation by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan of the authoritative Arabic book titled Hijab al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah fil Kitab was-Sunnah, by Muhammad Nasiruddin al-Albani, a famous scholar and traditionist. It was translated by this writer and initially published in condensed form in the quarterly, Islam and the Modern Age. The question of hijab (veil), or purdah in Urdu, the author tells us, has been discussed in the light of the Quran and Hadith. The following rules of hijab are applicable: the whole body, except for the exempted parts should be covered; but any veil which in itself becomes an attraction is to be avoided; garments should not be semi-transparent, dress should not be tight fitting, garments should not be perfumed, the form of dress should not in any way resemble that of men, it should not resemble that of non-believers and garments should not reflect worldly honor.
In the present book, Maulana Wahiduddin Khan explains that in terms of birth rate, men and women are almost equal in number. But subsequently, for a variety of reasons such as wars, the number of men in society decreases, leaving an excess of women. At such times the choice is not between monogamy and polygamy, but rather, between the lawful polygamy of Islam or the illicit polygamy of non-Islamic people. Such a situation emerged after the Battle of Uhud (3 A.H.) in which 70 Muslims were martyred and their widows and orphans were left without guardianship. At that time the following verse was revealed: ‘If you fear that you cannot deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry women of your choice, two, three or four; but if you fear that you might not be able to treat them with equal fairness, then only one.’ (The Quran, 4:3) It asked people who could afford it, to take care of the orphans by marrying the widows and keeping their orphaned children under their guardianship. This commandment is only temporary in effect, covering a state of emergency when, due to loss of men in battle, the number of women exceeded the available men.
